Travel Storage
Storing cigars while traveling is just about as important as maintaining them in your humidor. However, without the right system it can be considerably more difficult. This is due to the changes in temperature and humidity going back and forth from inside to outside and simply due to moving geographically en route to another location. Being inside planes, delivery trucks and automobiles do not help the situation—they actually make it much worse because of the extreme temperature changes in the cold winter and hot summer months.
How long does it take for a cigar to get damaged outside of a humidor?
It depends on the ambient climate (temperature and humidity). In desert climates like Arizona or Madrid, damage can take place in under an hour. In moderate climates, it can take just a couple of hours for the cigar to lose its outside layer of oils and sugars (i.e. The sheen on the cigar is a good indicator).
Although you can re-humidify a cigar that has dried a bit from traveling – you can never replace the oils and sugars that are lost in the process. Perhaps you’ve experienced this many times yourself – when one day a particular cigar tasted flavorful and then a few days later, the same brand of cigar out of the same box is lifeless and harsh. Two-way humidity control helps to eliminate this problem.
